In the ancient times, the Greeks and then the Romans and the Byzantines used marble in their buildings because they were fascinated by the colors and their symbolic aspect. The Roman emperors searched for the most beautiful stones throughout their vast empire with an extraordinary passion. Some of the materials that were used by the Romans are the today Mykalissos Gold & Mykalissos Red marble .The quarries are located at the site of Ritsona southeast of the Messapio mountain also known as Ktypas and specifically at the intersection of old highway Halkidos-Thebes with the road Ritsona-Vathy Avlidos, in Hani.
